At the EDDA Awards in November 2006 the film received 5 Awards.
  1. Film of the Year
  2. Best Actor in a Leading Role: Ingvar E. Sigurdsson
  3. Best Actor in a Supporting Role: Atli Rafn Sigurdarson
  4. Best Director: Baltasar Kormákur
  5. Music: Mugison (for both Jar City and A Little Trip to Heaven)

Jar City was first released internationally at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in July 2007, where it received the festival’s main award, The Crystal Globe, for Outstanding Artistic Contribution to World Cinema.

To this date the film has received the following international awards and nominations:
  1. Won the 2007 Crystal Globe at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.
  2. Won the 2007 FICC Don Quijote Prize at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.
  3. Won the 2007 Napapijri Prize at the Courmayeur Noir In Festival: Ingvar E. Sigurdsson for his leading role in Jar City.
  4. The International Film Festival in Valenciennes, France (2008). 1) Grand Prix as Best Film. 2) Director Baltasar Kormákur as Best Director. 3) Lead actor Ingvar E. Sigurdsson as Best Actor in Leading Role.
  5. Won the 2008 Breaking Waves Award for the strongest film in competition at the 15th Titanic International Film Festival in Hungary.
  6. Won the 2008 Audience Award at the Festival du Film policiers in Liege, Belgium.
  7. Nominated for the 2007 Nordic Film Council Prize.
  8. Short listed for the 2007 European Film Awards.

Jar City was Iceland’s entry for the Oscar nominations 2007 - The Foreign Language Film.
